Mission: to ensure the welfare, protection, provision and use of laboratory animals for medical, veterinary and other scientific purposes
About Association
Baltic Laboratory Animal Science Association (Balt-LASA) is an independent public organization uniting Lithuanian and Latvian professionals (scientists, researchers, students) whose activities include breeding, care, welfare, research and use of laboratory animals.
Our history
Balt-LASA was founded in 1991 in Riga (Latvia) on the initiative of the Latvian pharmaceutical company Gindex. The association was founded by Guna Jacobson. The first president of the association was Vija Klusa (1993-2002). During this time, contacts were established with the European Federation of Laboratory Animal Science Associations (FELASA). Balt-LASA became a member of FELASA in 1993. FELASA and its former president, Prof Timo Nevalainen, have contributed significantly to training staff and students in the Baltic countries. Thanks to their activities, the equipment in the animal laboratories has been brought up to date, and specialists have been trained according to FELASA standards. In 2002, Prof Osvaldas Rukšėnas was elected President of Balt-LASA. On his initiative, the association's headquarters were moved to Vilnius in 2004.

This project has received funding from the Research Council of Lithuania (LMTLT), agreement No S-ACO-24-35.
